TRUE DESIRES
What Eve truly desired was to become like God and the tree
that could grant her that was the Tree of Life (which represents Jesus). Remember there were two trees in the middle of the garden in Genesis 2:9. Jesus
declared, "I am the way, the truth, and the life in John 14:6." He embodied the
life that Eve longed for because to be like God is to possess the life of His
Son. Thus, Jesus was Eve's genuine desire.
Similarly, David's true desire was the beauty of God's holiness and not the nakedness of Bathsheba (Psalm 27:4). The express image of God's person is Jesus (Hebrews 1:3). Thus, Jesus was David's genuine desire.
Therefore, it is not the strong man with attractive muscles
and a chiseled physique that I desire; rather, it is the one known as Faithful
and True, the strongest man riding a heavenly horse. He is referred to as the Living Word
of God. It is not the beautiful and tender woman, captivating and gentle to my
touch with mesmerizing eyes, in whom I could lose myself indefinitely that I
desire; rather, it is the true beauty of one who is holy, that tender Lamb of God with eyes that burn with pure flames that I yearn for. My
longing is not for the wealth of gold, silver, diamonds, and material riches,
but for the wealth of grace, mercy, and divine wisdom that only God can bestow.
It is not the worldly properties and possessions that I seek, but rather the
eternal City of God, the heavenly Jerusalem.
I do not crave the power to dominate others, to achieve fame,
or to be considered great; instead, I desire to be seated with Christ in
heavenly places, united with Him in Christ Jesus. God has instilled these true
desires within me, but due to the influence of sin, my true desires became
distorted, and the objects of my desires shifted from Jesus to transient things
that will soon fade away like morning dew evaporating in the sun's heat.
Satan was aware of my holy and genuine desires, so he created twisted imitations of my true desires to entice me, leading me to choose the temporary over the everlasting.
Beneath my misguided desires lies the
truth, and just like the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well, it is Jesus whom I am
truly seeking. The new birth through faith in Christ has opened by eyes to the
truth. The living water He (Jesus) gave to me has quenched my thirst for sin and refreshed me with righteousness.
My true desires for Christ and His Kingdom will guide me
towards eternal life, but these perverted desires if I turn to them will lure me towards
destruction. Therefore, I must choose wisely.
