The Wild Berries

The Wild Berries

A young sheep craved so much for berries. The green pastures the Shepherd provided were not enough. It had heard of the delicious berries on the mountains where the wolves are. I can outwit the wolves he thought, let me get some delicious berries for myself.

And so one day, he left the sheepfold and headed for the mountains. He saw a lot of delicious grapes and ate as much as he could, but they were poisonous. The wolves were very clever they had howled ‘Sweet berries on the mountains’ at night, their trap had worked. Yes, obviously a sheep heard it and there it was lying almost dead for their consumption, but before they could pounce on it. The Shepherd showed up, and with the aid of his staff discomfited the wolves. He placed the sheep on his shoulders and led it home.

The wolves did not give up, they kept on howling ‘Sweet berries on the mountains'. The sheep heard and went again only to be rescued once more. The Shepherd's determination to save was more resilient than the wolves determination to destroy.

Why do I keep on straying away to the mountains for the wild berries? The young sheep asked. The thorns from the berries pierce my mouth and its poison runs through my veins. Every time I am lost, you find me wandering in the dark, and place my lifeless body on your shoulders. You lead me home, attend to my wounds and resuscitate me.
You stray away because of the pleasure you get from the berries, replied the Shepherd. But I will not give up on you my sheep. You belong to me, I am drawn to you more than you are drawn to the wild berries.

It breaks my heart to keep on straying away, is there a way for me to remain in the sheepfold? The young sheep asked. Yes there is replied the Shepherd. He opens a jar, and in it were different kinds of berries mixed with honey and the choicest fruits. All you need do is to ask, and I will give you, whatsoever you desire. The young sheep was ecstatic. It jumped up and down the valley. The Shepherd had gone the extra mile to get everything the sheep desired, but not wild berries, healthy ones mixed with honey.

Morals:
1. Do not give in to secret sinful pleasures, talk to the Lord about it. He will direct you and fulfill your desires beyond your imaginations. Isaiah 1:18-19.
2. The Lord will never give up on you, no matter how deep you have fallen, he is able to resuscitate you. John 10:28-30.

Well.. it's a clear example of how far the Good Shepherd (Jesus) is willing to go for us.. As the song writer Cory Asbury said "there's no shadow you won't light up, mountain you won't climb up.. coming after me.. there's no walk you won't kick down, lie you won't tear down.. coming after me.."

May the Lord give us the grace to stay away from sinful pleasures. Amen
